Citizen Sketcher

This is a blog/site where we can find very different aspects of art but the big part of it is dedicated to the watercolor. Marc Taro Holmes is the owner of the blog. Let me include a brief description of his history and life.

TAROSAN

This page is an archive of my figure drawing from 2006 to present day.

I’ve been using life drawing as my research lab and training ground. The place to test myself against the challenge of painting. As I write this I’ve been at it about eight years ten years ‘seriously’ with about ten years of dilettantism before that. (Art school, various warm ups to being a working artist). I think I’m starting to get somewhere.

But of course, it’s the nature of art to be a moving target. As your abilities grow, your critical eye becomes ever sharper. An artist should never be satisfied with their work, but yet, remain irrationally optimistic about the future.

I hope others out there working on their drawing might enjoy watching my progress. If only as an example of this stubbornness. Feel free to get in touch if you’re doing this too. I’d enjoy a chat with a fellow traveler.

[3 hours, watercolor on canson block]

This I think one is kind of a minor victory. I came away very happy with this session. Of course, this isn’t a great likeness – but I saw a momentary expression while they were fiddling with the lights, and I just decided to go with it. Create this madwoman out of  a perfectly normal model.

Somehow I feel in the combination of altering reality, and yet still drawing from what was there – I’m getting somewhere I like with this one.
